Be sure to Vote!

02-01-2010

YPO members are involved citizens dedicated to the success and improvement of Peoria. But you cannot truly be involved unless you vote, so get out there and make a difference! February 2, 2010 is Primary Election Day in Illinois and there are a number of great candidates running for local and state-wide office. For a primary election, voters will arrive at the polls and request either a Republican or Democratic ballot. Some nonpartisan races, such as school board, will appear on both ballots.

With recent elections in Peoria decided by only a handful of votes, each voice really does make a difference. Do your part to support our community, get out and vote on February 2nd.

Illinois Fair Map Amendment -- What is it and why should you care?

02-01-2010

Today in Illinois the standard assumption is that our legislators pick their voters rather than the voters pick their legislators. Why do Illinoisans say that? Because of how Illinois draws legislative districts after every census. For the past three decades legislators have created their districts after drawing a name out of a hat. Illinois is the ONLY state in the nation that allows such a process to determine who and how legislative districts are drawn. The result of this process is that 98% of the elections for the Illinois legislature are won by the incumbent.

To change this process and take it away from the elected officials and put it in the hands of an independent commission to make redistricting more transparent, fair and accessible to the public, we need your help.

Today voting is easier than ever. If you think you will not have time to vote on February 2nd, take advantage of early voting right now. This option is available until January 28th throughout the Peoria metro area. If you live inside the City, early voting is available at the Election Commission (next to the downtown police station), the Care and Treatment Board on Knoxville, or ICC North Campus on University. Early voting is even open on Saturdays. If you live outside the City, contact your County Clerk for a list of locations. The County Clerk's office can help you register to vote as well.
• Peoria County Clerk: 672-6070.
• Tazewell County Clerk: 477-2267

Young Professionals Give Back for the Holidays!

12-10-2009
The Young Professionals Organization celebrated the holiday season and to give back to the Central Illinois Community at the December 3rd YPO social. YPO hosted a community wide canned food / toy drive to support the Peoria Friendship House. The Peoria Friendship House of Christian Service is funded by the Heart of Illinois United Way, churches, individuals, grants/foundations, community support, and fundraisers.

With help from the Peoria community and YPO members, YPO was able to present The Peoria Friendship House with more than 300 canned food items, more than 150 toys, and in an auction and over $150 in cash.

Thank you to everyone that donated canned food or toys, gave money, attended the YPO social, and assist the Peoria Friendship House with their needs. All of the proceeds will assist those that are less fortunate during the holiday season.
